SPoTlight Productions and Red bull promoted Skateboarding in an unusual way but kept it simple. Set up, DJ, BattleShip! While skaters instanly thought about a 40 foot long smith grind on one of the big guns some veterans objected. Just read this thread from a the local tv station WECT TV6 web site.

In my opinion the use of the North Carolina "Memorial" in this manner is a blatent insult to the ships crew, especially those 10 brave sailors who gave their lives serving aboard her.
The BB-55 should be a revered and hallowed place where memories live on not a playground for those who don't even realize what she stands for.

"With all due respect Chief Master Ramsey, I think you are completely wrong. Those sailors gave their lives for freedom. I think they would be proud to see that young people are enjoying their freedom and expressing themselves in a constructive way. There is a Huge sense of patriotism in the skateboard community. I myself, served in the United States Army abroad, and have been skateboarding for over twenty years. I know plenty of skateboard enthusiasts who have or are serving in Iraq at this very moment. Assuming those boys do not realize the sacrifice those sailors and everyone one else that has served this country is wrong, and you know what assuming does......"

"I beg to differ. Almost all the competitors were teenagers and don't have a clue. If you had really been military and skating over 20 years then you are around 30 and are on the sponsoring end making a profit from this.
Whats next, have the Western finals on the Arizona memorial, or maybe the Nationals at Arlington."

This shows there are still some honorable people but with misguided thinking out there in the gen pop about skateboarding. Generally with some exceptions your average boarder appreciates and respects when a creative and unique event is put on. Skaters will always resent and disrespect every exploitation and an obvious grab for wallet. From what I saw the the honor of the memorial ship was strengthed by bringing Americans together. Some of the visitors would have never seen the ship if it was not for this event.
This out of the box and then skating on the box thinking is what drives skateboarding!
That said here are the results:
