Spot Checking: Mr. Smith goes to Berlin
interstate Pro, Gary Smith checks in with a travel blog about his current trip to Germany.
On this trip, I'm heading to Berlin but am also going to some other cities and staying with long time friend and filmer Mark Nickles. Mark works for Fuel TV and edited and filmed the Pit Crew video and has also done a lot of the filming for the Osiris vid.

Pit Crew rider Mark Weeks will be traveling with me and who knows who else with meet up with us.
Day 1
Here are couple of things you may not know about about flying to Europe. From the east coast it's a seven hour flight and Germany is six hours ahead. I left from Dulles airport in Virginia at 5:30 pm (with a layover in Amsterdam) and didn't arrive to Berlin until 11:30 am the next. Mark
Nickles met me at the air port and a couple of buses and trains later I was at Mark's house. The city feels like Manhattan just more spread out. I didn't really skate much the first day but you are allowed to drink beer any where you please! I watch Nester Jenkins and Mark Sweets skate these benches and had a beer. Tomorrow I'm going to a football (soccer) game. Should be interesting.

Day 2
The second day here jet leg had worn off but Mark Nickles had other plans for me instead of skating.
He wanted me to do something very European so we went to a soocer game. It was Berlin against Wolfsburg.
Wolfsburg is two hours from Berlin and the home of VW cars. The game winded up being tied 2 to 2 and then just ended which I found strange, but I will tell you this these people have pride in their team.
Every time Berlin would score it turned into a huge party.
Not a bad second day here I can't to see what's next.

Day 3
We woke up at a decent time (I guess in the skateboard world) and I got to try some German coffee it's a little stronger than home.Walking to get breakfast a saw a 12 foot wide tin vert ramp that looks more of a sliding board than a ramp.
The first spot we went to was this buttery ass bank under a parking garage but after about 20 mins we got the boot (somethings never change no mater where you are).
We decided to check out this crazy cement mini that was between two buildings and that you need to know someone to skate. In the middle of the flat was a bullseye and if you fell in it you had to buy everyone skating a beer, lucky for me I just missed the bullseye.
I saw more of the Berlin wall today and started to trip out that East and West Berlin were joined together less than 19 years ago. That night we headed out for a real German dinner and some beer.
Day 4
Today we got to skate these museum plazas which are a lot like skate parks.
The buildings are closed on Mondays so we sessioned them all day. It's been chilly here and I don't think I've seen the sun yet just a sky of over cast clouds. I can't believe how layed back it is here compared to home.
We also skated this do it yourself spot with tons of graphitte and home made quarter pipes.
The skate community is song here and Hopefully the sun will be shinning tomorrow.
That's it for now. More still to come. Keep checking back! Check out more of my photos here.
