Andrew Reynolds Previews the Maloof Money Cup
This week in Costa Mesa, California the Maloof Brothers will be the latest entrepreneurs to enter into the skateboarding world. Owners of the Sacramento Kings and the Palms hotel casino in Las Vegas these billionaire boys have the coin and the vision to try something different, be corporate without being corporate. The three ring circus that has become the AST has had four years to get the corporate contest model on lock. From instructing their staff to remove Red Bull, Rock Star and any other product not under the Dew umbrella from camera view, to clamping down on any media coverage outside of Fuel and MTV these guys should take a look at what will go down this weekend.
Maloof seems to gets that skateboarding is the dominant and most enduring of the "Action Sports". No BMX, no FMX - just skateboarding.
The commitment appears to elevating the contest platform back to one of respect. The almost $500,000 for the best skateboarders is fitting for the talent they have assembled. Matching the caliber of skaters is a concrete street course that resembles something natural. With so many skater's opinions actulaly being listened to, the hype over the contest is well deserved. Here is Andrew Reynolds thoughts on the event:
Throw in a Game of Skate, a Jam for the Ladies and an am-contest all in a four day stretch, and this weekend should be one of the best in skating history.
